Adelaide United at the FIFA Club World Cup

Adelaide United the Australian team that made it all the way to the Asian Champions League Final earned its place into the FIFA Club World Cup.

The team had to play Oceania Champions Waitakere United before moving onto Gamba Osaka their AFC Final opponents for a possible berth into a semi final against Manchester United.

Adelaide United vs Waitakere United
Adelaide cam up against a semi-pro team from New Zealand that had earned the right to be named Oceania Champions.

The match was a poor match by anyones standards with Adelaide looking the better side but failing to get through the 10 man defense.

The Australian team looked dangerous from set pieces creating plenty of near misses from corners but it was a Eugene Galekovic howler that produced the first goal of the game.

Eugene dropped a ball in the 6 yard box which fell right to the feet of Waitakere striker Paul Seaman who could not miss to give the semi-pro team an unlikely lead.

The goal stirred Adelaide into action with Daniel Mullen scoring a ferious header from a corner to tie the scores leading into half time.

Waitakere United never looked like scoring in the 2nd half with Adelaide once again scoring from a set piece a delightful header from Travis Dodd gave the Australian team a deserved but unconvincing win.

Adelaide dominated possession 64%-36% had 19 shots to 6 and 19 corners to 3 but they lacked passing quality through the middle of the park they simply could not unlock the semi-pro defense always pushing the ball wide it really displayed the sad side to Australian football.

Adelaide United vs Gamba Osaka
Adelaide came up against Champions League rivals Gamba Osaka after a poor match against the semi-pro Oceania Champions.

The match against Gamba was a great contest with both sides creating plenty of chances in a splendard game of football. The Japanese side had the edge over the Australian team but it was the Australian’s who had the early chances.

Travis Dodd had an excellent run in the 15th minute heading in on from half way running and weaving in and out of two defenders only to put his shot wide from inside the box disappointing end to a great run.

On 23 minutes a horrible defensive error let Endo the talented but extremely strange looking striker score disappointing for the Australian team who defended so well up to that point.

Adelaide didn’t give up and in the 42nd minute Travis Dodd ratted the underside of the bar with a header almost giving the Australian team an equaliser.

The second half was filled with chances many for Gamba Osaka but it was the Australian side that should have scored with substitute Robert Younis’s strike narrowly missing 1 meter wide of the post and Travis Dodd the captain missing a crossed header by inches that clipped the outside of the post.

A game that deserved a goal for the Australian’s ended 1-0 heartbraking for the fans and the players because they played so well even though they lack the passing skills that are so often on display in the UEFA Champions League and EPL.

Adelaide United vs Al Ahly
Adelaide may not have been able to play the Red Devils of Manchester but they were able to play the Red Devils of Egypt for 5th place at the FIFA Club World Cup.

A club that played completely different football to Adelaide was always going to be an interesting encounter. The Australian side grabbed the lead with Cristiano picking up possession in the inside left channel, cut inside and unleashed an unstoppable right footed shot, which swerved past the dive of the outstretched keeper and into the top right hand corner of the net.

1-0 was the lead to Adelaide and the final score but just looking at the stats is was a game Al Ahly may have deserved to win with 58% possesion 15 shots to 6 and 9 corners to 2 but after the unlucky loss against Gamba who cares if they deserved to win or not.

On the Campaign
It has to be said the campaign was been a good one for Adelaide in both the AFC Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup sadly due to AFC rules Adelaide can’t possibly compete in next seasons AFC Champions League or the FIFA Club World Cup instead it will be strugglers Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets.

i really think that adelaide should have smashed waitakre they were a poor side and deserved to be demolished.
the gamba game was of excellent quality but i think u should have talked about how poorly travis dodds finishing ability was he could have sent them into the final to play man united imagine how much it would put adelaide into the limelight.
i cant comment on your summary of the Al Ahly match because i did not watch it.
