Arshavin had two chances to give Arsenal the lead on his debut

Arshavin played well but could not score as Arsenal struggle to move into the Champions League places.The Russian international had two chances to give Arsenal the lead in the first fifteen minutes but did not score. Carlos Vela, Robin van Persie and William Gallas all had chances late on but the game ended goalless.

Sunderland were struggling to get the ball in the first half but defended well.Andy Reid shot over and Dean Whitehead saw his shot saved by Almunia.

Toure’s header beat Fulop but was safely cleared off the line by the Sunderland defence. Arsenal couldn’t break down a well-played Sunderland defence and the fans and players were rather frustrated with the final result of this game.

Arsenal dominated most of the possession but couldn’t break the deadlock at Emirates Stadium.Vela missed two chances that should have won Arsenal the game but the frustration keeps on going at the club.

A van Persie free-kick that was beaten away by Fulop was a rare moment of goalmouth action.Just before the final whistle Gallas rushed his shot and van Persie’s shot went straight at Fulop.

Arsene Wenger said “We had the chances but we could not get the goal that would have made us happy.

“We don’t concede goals but we want take advantage of the chances that we create - we need to play with a little bit more freedom.

“Andrey Arshavin showed some good signs but he is also showed that he is not completely fit.”

Arsenal are now six points behind fourth placed Aston Villa and are unlikely to reach the top four by the end of this season.
