Arsenal Transfer News

With the summer upon us the flurry of transfer activity is well and truly in full flow, with Kaka & reportedly Cristiano Ronaldo both cementing historic transfers to Real Madrid.

But what about the Gunners?

With a seemingly limited budget, it has been hinted at several times that Arsene Wenger may need to sell in order to buy with the club criminally missing a domineering centre half and a midfield general - players such as Patrick Vieira and Sol Campbell have never been adequately replaced it seems.

However, with the likelihood of Wenger commanding a full scale clear out of the lockers, it’s almost certain that transfer targets will be limited this summer - especially with the financial firepower of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City pricing them out of the market.

Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax has been the focal point of constant speculation over the past few days with a reported £10million deal agreed and only personal terms to be settled. The Belgian centre half can also play left back and centre midfield, which would almost certainly provide cover for two of Wenger’s problem positions on the pitch.

After the William Gallas saga earlier this season, Wenger may be keen to offload this ineffective element of the Ashley Cole transfer deal and Juventus could be the destination for him. Giorgio Chiellini has been in the thoughts of the Gunners’ boss for some time, and the pair could be involved in a cash + player swap - the same form of transfer which brought the outspoken Frenchman to the Emirates Stadium.

One player who seems certain to be heading out of the exit door at the Emirates this summer, is lanky Togolese hitman Emmanuel Adebayor. After falling out of favour with the fans after his constant flirting with AC Milan, the African Footballer of the Year failed to repeat the 30-goal-a-season heroics that propelled him to his short lived status as an Arsenal icon.

Barcelona’s triumphant march to the Champions League title saw some titantic displays from their versatile midfield giant Yaya Toure. With brother Kolo already in the ranks at Arsenal, Yaya is another man who Wenger could turn to to plug gaps in both centre midfield and the middle of the ailing defence which leaked cheap and costly goals sporadically over last season.

In attack, Wenger is seeking another prolific hitman who can partner the likes of Robin van Persie and Eduardo da Silva upfront, after Nicklas Bendtner has failed endeer himself to the Emirates faithful this season. Roque Santa Cruz will undoubtedly be linked with a number of clubs over this summer, and north London will be another potential destination for the Paraguayan.

With Manuel Almunia providing a composed and solid option as number, and Lukasz Fabianski recently signing a new long-term deal, it is unlikely that the French tactician will opt to purchase another goalkeeper. Vito Mannone also had a chance to impress in the final game of the season against Stoke, and it’s likely that he will remain at the club with a chance of playing in the Carling Cup.
