Ajax Outclass City

Dutch giants Ajax thrashed Bristol City 4-0 last night, in the Robins’ first pre-season friendly at home.

A 10,000-strong crowd were on hand to see the Amsterdam side easily outplay the home side.

All of Bristol City’s new signings played a part during the 90 minutes, with trialists Alexei Eremenko, Grigorios Papazacharias and Peter Brezovan also getting a run-out.

Finnish midfielder Eremenko, and Greek defender Papazacharias will not be offered contracts by Gary Johnson, although he has not ruled out making Brezovan’s presence at the club, permenent.

Brezovan, who used to line up for City’s local rivals, Swindon, was drafted in at the last minute. With first-choice Adriano Basso and back-up Stephen Henderson suffering from injuries, there was no cover for new City stopper Dean Gerken. Leaving the 29 year-old Slovakian to make a quick trip to Ashton Gate to fill in.

Johnson told BBC Sport about the bizarre circumstances by which the 29 year-old Slovakian joined the squad.

He said: “I asked my brother [NB: one of City's scouts] about two o’clock if he knew anyone in the area that could get to us by six o’clock.”

“He did OK for us. We might just get him for a couple of days rather than just send him back.”

The game itself was not all that engrossing. However, the Bristolian fans were treated to some good football from the Dutch powerhouses.

New Ajax captain Luis Suarez opened the scoring with a neat finish after 25 minutes, with the highly-rated Urby Emanuelson nipping the ball past Gerken following a great Ismael Aissati pass, 10 minutes later.

The score stayed that way until the 81st minute, when former Newcastle forward Albert Luque scored a fluke goal from 30-plus yards out. Brezovan, who had replaced Gerken at half time, unfortunately dropped the ball straight into the net to give the visitors a 3 goal lead. The rout was completed by Dennis Rommedahl, another familiar face to English fans, who chipped the ball over Brezovan to make it 4-0 with 7 minutes left.
