23: Rafael Van der Vaart

Rafael van der Vaart is 25 years old and he plays as an attacking midfielder for Hamburger SV in the number 23 shirt. He was born in Heemskerk on the 11th February 1983, and is 1.75 metres tall and weighs 70 kilograms. Until present, he has played for just two professional teams. He started his youth career at De Kennemers at the age of 4 in 1987. His potential was noticed by top-club Ajax and they snapped him in 1993. In 2000, he signed his first professional contract with the club, and played for Ajax until the summer of 2005, when he moved to Hamburg. In the past season, his team classified 4th in the Bundesliga, thus earning a place in UEFA Cup.

 

Van der Vaart made his senior international debut on the 6th October 2001 in a match against Andorra. He was part of the squad for Euro 2004, World Cup 2006, as well as the current European Championship. His performances for club and country have caught the attention of a number of big European teams, aiming to get his signature this summer. In Euro 2008, he played in all matches except the match against Romania. His first performance against Italy was very good, but he did not perform as well in the other matches. He wore the number 23 jersey for Holland. Until now, he has appeared 58 times for the Oranjes, with a return of 12 goals.
