Ipswich Town Q&A

1. Firstly, there is a lot of expectation on the Ipswich side to get promotion; do you think Ipswich can achieve that this season?

Without a doubt. It was disappointing to lose on Sunday against Coventry but we have signed some very good players over the summer and we have a manager (unlike previous boss Jim Magilton) who can get the best out of his players and someone who knows how to win promotion. The game was live on Sky and people will have seen that we were unlucky to lose, we had 20 shots on goal but it was just one of those days that it wouldn’t go in for us with a combination of top goalkeeping and near misses.

2. Roy Keane is in his first full season with the club, so are you happy with the way things are going with him in charge?

You will always get the odd one or two doubters but I am firmly behind our gaffer. He has signed Tamas Priskin who will hopefully prove to be a bargain at £1.7 million with 20 goals this season, as well as going back to Man U and signing Lee Martin who has proved to be a tricky winger. Keano isn’t afraid to blood the youngsters either – at just 16 years old, we have striker Connor Wickham who started the other night against Shrewsbury and scored two as well as a penalty in the shoot out, and has been involved in nearly all the pre-season games.

3. You suffered defeat in your first game of the season against Coventry, what were your thoughts on that match?

I think I’m a jinx on the team; we rarely win when I go away! I was shocked at our defending in the first half, but then they didn’t get a sniff and we should have come away with all 3 points.

4. Your new signing Damien Delaney used to play for Leicester, what are your first thoughts on him?

He hasn’t settled in yet, we get QPR fans on our forum telling us that they saw us coming with our chequebook! He is yet to impress me, but not every player settles down straight away. David Wright, our right back, took a year to settle in and is now one of our best and most consistent performers.

5. Pablo Counago nearly joined Swansea in the transfer window, how grateful are you that Ipswich has kept him?

He won’t get us 20 goals unfortunately, and as much as the fans love him, it may be time to part with him. We are looking to sign another striker (we are reported to have signed Daryl Murphy this afternoon), which would probably mean he is on his way.

6. Who would you say is Ipswich’s key player at the minute?

That’s a toughy. We have important players all over the pitch, obviously Gareth McAuley at the back is our captain and you had him at Leicester, so you know all about him. He scored twice when playing for the Foxes against us, so it would be nice for him to score his first goal against you on Saturday! David Norris is missing for five months after injuring himself on Sunday, and he is a big big player for us, it’s such a shame because I thought he would have a good season. Jon Walters is probably our best player – he has everything, aerial ability, strength, control, finishing, consistency and is a massive influence on our team.

7. Also who is the upcoming talent in the Ipswich side?

Connor Wickham as mentioned above, but we also have Liam Trotter in centre midfield as well as Pim Balkestein at the back.

8. There is speculation surrounding the club that Giovani Dos Santos is returning on loan, how excited would you be about the youngster’s return?

I’d love it, but I can’t see it happening. Until I see it on the official site, I won’t believe it.

9. Do you think your new signing Darryl Murphy will make his debut against Leicester this Saturday?

He hasn’t signed yet (officially!)

10. Lastly the all important score prediction?

We need to get back to winning ways but it won’t be difficult… Even though that isn’t reflected in my prediction of 3-1 to Ipswich.
