Top 10 EVER Manchester City Players - No. 10

This blog is designed to choose the greatest ever Manchester City player in my opinion (remember I am only young!). I shall publish one of these every now and again until finally we reach the best player ever to have embraced Maine Road or The City of Manchester Stadium!

NUMBER 10 >>>

2001-2004, 67 appearances, 9 goals

His skill blew me away at times, linking up so fantastically with the likes of Anelka and Goater and instrumental in holding the midfield with Ali Bernabia. Berkovic was often the catalyst in the most ‘pleasing to watch’ City side I’ve seen. Pivotal in the 2002-03 promotion campaign under Keegan, Berkovic carried that form into the Premiership and the way he dominated the midfield in the two Manchester derbies in our first season back in the top flight (against the likes of Paul Scholes) is a testament to his ability. Unfortunately his temperament let him down at times, other than that, a good footballer to grace Maine Road.

  1. Steven Goran Erikkson Says:

Unexpected blog, but a nice idea nevertheless.

You needed to get in somewhere ‘Israeli international Eyal Berkovic’
Did you know that his kids used to go to the same school as me?!?!?!?

My top 10 (chosen because of their impact on the club rather than individual qualities), and I know that some of these will be in your list as well, are:

    10)Paul Dickov (for THAT goal)
    9)Eyal Berkovic
    8)Gerard Wiekens
    7)Andy Morrison
    6)Richard Dunne
    5)Uwe Rosler
    4)Nicky Weaver (think Wembley)
    3)Ali Benarbia
    2)Shaun Wright-Phillips
    1)Shaun Goater

    or an alternative list:

    10)Robert Taylor
    9)Tal Ben-Haim
    8)Felipe Caicedo
    7)Djamel Belmadi
    6)Hatem Trabelsi
    5)Laurent Charvet
    4)Danny Mills
    3)Steve McManaman
    2)Glauber Berti
    1)Gelson Fernandes

  2. Ched Evans IS MY HERO :) Bellamy you’re not bad either ;) Says:

Steven, you are correct, a few of them overlap, I have also added in a few oldies, I’m sure you can guess who!

I will not give away any ideas as to who is in the 10, all will be revealed!

I’m still gutted I got Trabelsi 27 on the black away kit

  3. Steven Goran Erikkson Says:

You shouldn’t add in oldies. We could all do that. You should do players you have seen.

  4. I*T*P*L Says:

I must disagree with Steven. What good’s a best players ever list with players from just the last ten or so years?

Berkovic is looking great these days isn’t he!

  5. Ched Evans IS MY HERO :) Bellamy you’re not bad either ;) Says:

Steven - I have added in 2 ‘oldies’ who I never saw play, but we have all seen videos and footage of them?

Uwe Rosler is surely classed as an ‘oldie’ I cannot remember ever seeing a game with him playing in? Can you?

  6. Ched Evans IS MY HERO :) Bellamy you’re not bad either ;) Says:

‘Captain Dunkirk’ I have featured 4 players from your list in my top 10, but please bear in mind I am only young and have not seen a lot of the players in your list!

What are your opinions of Berkovic then?

  7. Jack Says:

    1 Ken Mulhearn
    2 Tony book
    3 Glyn Pardoe
    4 Mick Doyle
    5 George Heslop
    6 Alan Oakes
    7 Mike Summerbee
    8 Colin Bell
    9 Francis Lee
    10 Neil Young
    11 Tony Coleman

    OOps sorry that’s 11

And YES I did see them play, this old b’stard was 23 in 1968!

  8. Henry Lloyd Says:

I’m young too and think Eyal was instrumental to City’s progression. Good choice, i eagerly await your countdown!

  9. Ched Evans IS MY HERO :) Bellamy you’re not bad either ;) Says:

‘Jack’ thank you for your comment, much appreciated. I notice you miss Bert Trautmann out of your team. Why? Again, I’m too young to remember a few of those players, although I always hear that Summerbee was a quality player!

‘Henry’ - again, thanks for your comment, Number 9 will be up on Friday…want to guess as to who it will be?!

  10. Henry Lloyd Says:

Good question…I would put Dunne in there, but I don’t know if you will put him high or low, or even at all!? Anelka, even though he was a grumpy sod? SWP?

  11. Jack Says:

I missed out Bert because I just picked the title winning team from ‘68 lol

  12. Jack Says:

    All English btw

  13. Ched Evans IS MY HERO :) Bellamy you’re not bad either ;) Says:

That shows how young I am then, didn’t spot that at all! Good thinking!

The fact they are all English just shows how much the game has changed over recent decades, for the worst, or for the better?

  14. peter Says:

my favourite player iv ever seen in a city shirt is andy morrison!

however, the best player iv ever seen at city is ali b, he was simply the king!

  15. Ched Evans IS MY HERO :) Bellamy you’re not bad either ;) Says:

    Keep watching this space then!

  16. BringBackBananas Says:

27yrs old, watching city since 88-89… so based my list on what i have seen!

    1 kinkladze
    2 lake
    3 benarbia
    4 morrison
    5 rosler
    6 anelka
    7 quinn
    8 berkovic
    9 horlock
    10 ireland

  17. Ched Evans IS MY HERO :) Bellamy you’re not bad either ;) Says:

‘BringBackBananas’ I love you ‘name’! I was at the Arsenal game on Saturday and was given an inflatable banana! Love it!

Your list is very good, alot of players there will feature in mine!

Anelka though? Moody, arrogant little sod, ut I agree, deadly when on form!

  18. Steven Goran Erikkson Says:

I missed out Kinkladze from my list! And yes, I did see Rosler play, when we were away at Tranmere.

Anelka crossed my mind but left him out because there were others players who had contributed more.

Matt, if possible, can you not post the next one on Friday, because the Hamburg review will go up then, then the Fulham preview on Saturday and then review on Monday. So maybe do number 9 on Sunday???

  19. Ched Evans IS MY HERO :) Bellamy you’re not bad either ;) Says:

    Number 9 Friday night?

  20. Steven Goran Erikkson Says:

Preferably not, coz you said one a week, but if you have to …

  21. truey Says:

5.shaun goater (coz dint really see him play am only 12)
    7.kompany jong
    10. and ive heard about someone called geogi kindkladze or sumthin like that

  22. Ronson Says:

Fav player has to be Nelly Young, a big softy but oh so many great goals. Bell, Lee & Buzzer as a combo, Benarbia for sheer class, best class act ever seen at Maine Rd, all the others I’ve seen don’t match up.

Favorite non City players Ivan Campo & xBlackburn Tugay cos they always played with a smile.

  23. Blue Moon Says:

my favorite city player of all time has to be the goat. Not the best by a long way but a pleasure to see score against anyone.

  24. Steven Goran Erikkson Says:

    Captain Dunkirk,

I’m afraid I’m only 16, and naturally have heard of the likes of Colin Bell, Franny Lee ets, but never Zazi Deyna. When you first put Deyna in your list, I thought it was a typo and you meant Reyna as in Claudio Reyna. Could you possibly enlighten me as to the talents and some info of Deyna.

And, by the way, when I was once City mascot, my captain was Richard Edgehill, a true gentleman!

  25. Blue Moon Says:

What about the Whitley brothers? A pair of good footballing brothers, with better hair!!
Dennis Law (although I never saw him play - like Steven, i am only 16) will always be remembered by me for sending the scum from Trafford (not Manchester) down. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!!

  26. Steven Goran Erikkson Says:

Whitley brothers??? One certainly knew how to party, whilst the other one is a reformed alchoholic, who now sells cars!?!?!?

  27. Blue Moon Says:

Jim is now an artist after studying at Loreto College in Moss Side

  28. Steven Goran Erikkson Says:

Thanks, why aren’t you commenting of the Hamburg preview?

  29. Ched Evans IS MY HERO :) Bellamy you’re not bad either ;) Says:

    Thanks for all the comments!

    Whitley brothers…get out of here!

Although Ian Bishop is a great shout, I might add him in?!
