Penalty Galor At Pompey

United returned to winning ways tonight with a five goal thriller against bottom of the table Portsmouth. Although without Ferguson on the touchline, the reds shown he wasn’t needed with a hat trick from Wayne Rooney and a one hundredth premier league goal for Ryan Giggs.

Having taken the lead through Rooney’s early penalty, the Reds had to overcome the concession of a baffling spot-kick for the home side, which Kevin-Prince Boateng converted. Rooney struck twice after the break, once in open play, one from the spot again, however, before Giggs struck a late free-kick to cap a superb personal display.

United were off-key for much of the first 45 minutes, with Pompey deservedly level despite the controversial nature of their goal, but after the interval the Reds ran amok, comfortably strolling to all three points in the teeming rain as Sir Alex Ferguson watched on from the shelter of the Fratton Park stands.

The first goal of the night was in the twenty fourth minute when Pompey captain Brown trod on Wayne Rooney’s foot resulting in a penalty which he later converted into his ninth goal of the season. The next goal was unbelievably also from the spot just nine minutes later. A controversial shirt pull in the area lead to the second penalty and goal of the game when Nemanja Vidic supposedly pulled Frederic Picquionne shirt stopping him getting the ball although it was already punched away by Tomaz Kuszczak.

United’s frustrations were eased as the second period began, and the lead was retaken within three minutes of the restart. Fletcher and Giggs combined superbly to provide Rooney’s second goal, in a devastating move in which all three players used their weaker foot. Fletcher’s left-footed chip sprung the offside trap for Giggs and Rooney, with only Kaboul providing cover for the hosts, Giggs crossed right-footed and Rooney placed his left-footed effort underneath Begovic to put United back in front. Within long, two became three for both United and Rooney.

The reds next goal came from no other source than a penalty kick. After an excellent build up, Ryan Giggs was halted by Piquionne when he tripped the Welsh winger over prompting Mark Dean to point to the spot for the third time of the night. The final goal of the night came from a united free kick. As both Giggs and Rooney stoud over the ball rooney dummied it prompting Ryan Giggs to curl his one hundredth premier League goal past stand in goalkeeper Begovic making the end score 4-1 to Ferguson’s men.

I believe that united deserved the win but Pompey put up a stern defence in both halves but they just couldn’t convert the chance they got.
