Accies Hold Gers to Replay

Hamilton and Rangers will have to battle it out again for a place in the Scottish Cup Fifth Round after a pulsating 3-3 draw at New Douglas Park. Rangers were in cruise control at one point in the game, but Hamilton were resilient and brave to go back infront before half-time. Kenny Miller’s equaliser sends this match to a replay arranged for Tuesday, January 19th 2010 which is after the two sides meet again in the SPL next Saturday.

The game kicked-off at a frantic pace and Rangers seemed to be in control as Steven Whittaker scored the opener after 4 minutes after firing the ball home from close range into the net. Rangers continued to dominate the game but had to wait another 25 minutes before getting their second when Kenny Miller, who returns from suspension for this game, scored his 13th of the season, with his 14th coming later in the match.

Hamilton didn’t give up and seemed to be revitalised after the second Rangers goal and Mickael Antoine Courier was causing the Rangers defence major problems. Kirk Broadfoot was penalised for a foul after 39 minutes and Simon Mensing converted from the spot to give Hamilton a glimpse of hope. In injury time, Marco Paixao scored a scrappy equaliser for Hamilton when a long-ball wasn’t cleared by the Rangers defence and Paixao reacted before anybody else to poke the ball home. Incredibly, Hamilton ran up the park and scored again in first half injury time when David Weir had an embarrasing slip and Courier ran through on goal, chased by Danny Wilson, the Hamilton striker cooly slotted the ball past the helpless Allan McGregor. Their dreadful few minutes was topped off when Kris Boyd and Steven Davis both went off injured at half-time.

Rangers came out second half as if they have just had a rocket up their backsides. Kyle Lafferty had a good chance but his miss summed up his Rangers career so far. The referee gave another penalty, this time to Rangers when Stuart Elliot handled the ball inside the box and Kenny Miller stepped up to send Tomas Cerny the wrong way and take the game to a replay. With 10 minutes remaining, Hamilton had Richard Hastings sent off for two bookable offences and he will miss the replay at Ibrox.

The winners of this tie will take on St Mirren at St Mirren Park in the Fifth Round.
