Cerny’s Class Display Not Enough To Stop Accies Exit

Tomas Cerny of Hamilton produced an excellent display of goalkeeping last night and single-handidly denied Rangers a comfortable victory at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup replay.

Kenny Miller was denied a penalty early doors for Rangers when he was hacked down by Simon Mensing after the pace of the Scottish striker was too much for the Hamilton defender. The in-form striker had a number of oppertunities in the first-half with his first glimpse of goal coming from a delicate header that went past the post resulting in boot in the face from Tomas Cerny. He then hit the bar for the first time when he dived out to divert Papac’s cross into the net but it cannoned off the bar and out of play. The crossbar denied Rangers for a second time when Miller managed to go clear on goal and his rattled shot fired off the crossbar with Cerny beaten. Apart from Miller, Sasa Papac, Steven Davis, John Fleck and Nacho Novo all had chances for Rangers in the first-half.

In the second-half, the game seemed to slow down a little bit despite Rangers throwing forward and almost losing altogether as Hamilton decided to throw players forward when they got the chance. David Elebert headed a Danny Wilson header off the line before the end of the 90 minutes which saw Rangers somehow head into extra-time.

Whittaker scored an excellent goal in extra time

To their credit, Hamilton huffed and puffed throughout a frustrating night as Rangers seemed to throw everything at the Accies goal. It took Rangers another 8 minutes to break the deadlock with Miller breaking the offside trap before cutting inside and his left-foot shot took a deflection before looping over the unlucky Cerny. Steven Whittaker, who started at right-back before moving to left-midfield, produced an excellent goal to give Rangers a 2-0 lead when he cut inside at the edge of the box before his right-foot effort went sailing into the top corner.

Rangers held on to the victory despite late threats from Marco Paixao and Stuart Elliot, the holders will now face St Mirren in the next round at St Mirren Park.
