Ronaldo and Raul Albiol complete moves to Madrid whilst Saviola waves goodbye

Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed to join Real Madrid and will be officially unveiled as a Real player on the 1st July, bringing an end to one of the most spectacular, and controversial, transfer sagas of all time.

Ronaldo hasn’t exactly been lying low during the transfer saga; earlier in the week he was seen partying with notorious heiress Paris Hilton

Manchester United posted a short statement on their website confirming the wingers departure, informing fans that: “Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure is all but done and dusted after Real Madrid and Manchester United finalised the agreement for his transfer on Friday evening.”

“The Portuguese winger was the subject of a world record £80million offer from the Spanish club on Thursday 11 June. He has since been on holiday but a return to work with new employers now beckons, with the sale set to be completed on Wednesday 1 July.”

“United have made no further comment, other than to confirm the finalisation.”

Interestingly, the 83 word post chooses not to wish Ronaldo luck for the future, just another example of the bitterness that surrounds the transfer. It seems that everyone at the club and all of the fans are disappointed with Ronaldo’s attitude, especially after the club supported him after his infamous “wink” which left the player the most hated man in England. The absence of any gratitude towards Ronaldo in the post is most unlike the statement United posted on their website regarding outgoing forward Carlos Tevez, where the club expressed their appreciativeness of the forward, writing: “The Club would like to thank Carlos for his services over the last two seasons and wishes him good luck for the future.”

Fans feel betrayed by Ronaldo, especially after they stuck by him after the 2006 winking incident

There is understandably more positivity at the Madrid end; the official club website announced the finalisation of the deal shortly after United, and various Real Madrid supporters forums have broke the news in a jubilant fashion.

It is believed that Madrid paid a little over £80 million to secure the player’s services, and the Portugese international will reportedly be paid over £11 million a year.

Elsewhere, the club have confirmed the signing of promising young defender Raul Albiol.

The Spanish international has been bought off Valencia for £12 million and has signed a five year contract. The player is a shrewd signing and his presence will strengthen the club’s weak defence. Both the Madrid and Valencia website’s confirmed the deal, and his former club wished the defender the best of luck at Madrid.

And finally, Javier Saviola has ended his relatively unsuccessful spell at Real Madrid. The former Barcelona frontman joined Real in 2007, but only managed four goals in a stint which saw him play only 16 times. The Argentinian has joined Benfica for three years, in a deal worth 5 million euros.
