Recruitment drive still on hold

Sheffield United’s summer squad-building is still on hold after manager Kevin Blackwell confirmed that John Halls will not be joining The Blades.

Versatile defender Halls spent the back end of last season on loan at Bramall Lane from Reading and, after he was released from his Madjeski Stadium contract, rumours suggested Blackwell would sign Halls permanently on a free transfer to provide back up for Derek Geary at right-back.

“I have made the decision because I don’t think we will be short of cover in that area,” Blackwell said. “We have Derek Geary, Kyle Naughton, and one or two other Academy products in the pipeline.”

Naughton spent a period on loan at troubled Scottish side Gretna last season, where he impressed on debut against Rangers and helped set up a goal.

“If you have an Academy you would hope to get one or two through to the first team, and Kyle did so well in his loan spell over the border last term, I would really like to take a look at him,” Blackwell continued.
