Redknapp: Lennon Needs to Work on Final Ball

Nippy winger Aaron Lennon has been in fine form recently, netting three times in recent weeks, and has been tipped by many inside Tottenham to regain his England pace. However, boss Harry Redknapp has stated that he does need to work on his final delivery.

He said: “If Aaron has got one fault, it’s his final ball. He’s a real threat, the little lad.

“He’s got that ability and that pace to go at defenders. He’s a fantastic talent, but he does need to improve his final ball.

“Sometimes he hits balls across the face of goal, they look great balls but they have got too much pace on them for anyone to deal with.

“In the first half, he had one - Darren Bent tried to head one that came in like a rocket.

“He had a great position when he broke away and we had three or four arriving in the box, and he only had to pick somebody out at the back post, but he hit a low ball in.

“Sometimes, he has just got to lay the ball in and put it in that space and let people arrive on to it, whereas people are looking to arrive and the ball is zipping past them before they have got a chance to get anywhere near it.

“He’s got to just get that little bit of feel on his final ball.”

Lennon was perhaps Tottenham’s best player in the Carling Cup final defeat, and can cause any full-back in the country problems with his pace; including Gael Clichy and Patrice Evra. But his final ball was touted as his achiles heel from the moment he made his Spurs debut, following a £1m transfer from Leeds.

also i think redknapp is being quite harsh there. You would be nothing without lennon. He is a class footballer and if Harry really thinks that then he should not go to a conference and say it because that is not going to help lennon in any way. it will just put him down of he hears his gaffa saying that he “only had to pick somebody out at the back post, but he hit a low ball in.” that is pretty harsh really!!! you agree????

I agree. He should have given him things to work on, not picked out specific instances in the game and criticised him for a simple mistake. He could have said “He’s really been improving in recent weeks and put in some quality performances. However, his final ball still needs a bit of work.”

Besides, Bentley is the one that is supposed to have a good cross, but Lennon’s delivery has been better, and Lennon offers much more as an all-round player.
