Spurs to play in Wembley Cup

To kick-off the club’s pre-season action, Tottenham will travel to participate in a new tournament in England’s new home of football. The club will play at Wembley for the third time in three seasons when they meet Barcelona and Celtic in a competition which also involves Egyptian champions Al Ahly. The newly crowned European Champions, Barcelona, will showcase their immense talent on Friday 24 and Sunday 26 July.

The tournament will signal the start of preperations for the new season with (I wish) a few big money signings making their debuts. Although an excellent pre-season has proved a poisoned challice over the last few seasons, so would success in the competition really be the best thing?

Spot the difference. Answers - Player on the right will be playing in tournament, player on the left won’t. Player on the right is world class, player on the left is cr*p

Nevertheless, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is looking forward to the fixtures. He said: “It’s an honour to be part of the first Wembley Cup which is set to be a fantastic occasion at one of the greatest stadiums in the world. Facing both Barcelona and Celtic at Wembley is a terrific prospect for everyone at the club and for our fans. These will be important matches for the squad in our preparation for the new season against two of the biggest names in world club football.”

Whilst Barca’s rookie, if treble-winning, manager also has fond memories of Wembley. He explained: “The Wembley Cup is a fantastic opportunity for our fans in the UK to watch Barcelona play in the incredible surroundings of Wembley Stadium. The club has happy memories of Wembley having won the European Cup there in 1992 so it is great to be returning.  The tournament will be a very important part of our preparations for the new season.” The Catalan legend has already led his team to become the first Spanish team to win the treble, and clearly feels the cup will help them to do it all again next campaign.

The tournament should be a success, with Celtic and Tottenham certain to bring a huge number of supporters, and a plethora of international talent sure to be on show.

Wembley has played host to some world class teams down the years
