Wigan v Tottenham – Match Preview

Just nine days after their F.A. Cup meeting at White Hart Lane, Wigan will host Tottenham at the JJB on Sunday. Steve Bruce’s side have had a fantastic season, thus far, and, although nobody is safe this season, the seventh-place side look in no trouble of succumbing to relegation. The North London outfit have performed to the highest standard in one and a half of the opening two games of 2009. Both being in cup competitions, Harry Redknapp’s side look to replicate that form in the Premiership, something they haven’t been able to do in a while.

Team News

Jermain Defoe is available after his return to the capital was completed yesterday afternoon. Spurs are also boosted by the returning Englishman, Jermaine Jenas, Tom Huddlestone and Darren Bent, who have all missed out due to injury. Benoit Assou-Ekotto is serving the last of a three-match suspension. David Bentley has been deployed on the left wing in recent matches, but has been shocking after the hype of Redknapp’s confidence boosting has faded away. Although he was withdrawn at half time in Tuesday night’s Carling Cup tie against Burnley, he will probably be persisted with. Giovani Dos Santos has also returned and will hopefully be brought on around the 70 minute mark. The team is set to look something like this:

Corluka       King       Woodgate       Bale

Lennon     Zokora        Modric        Bentley

              Pavlyuchenko   Defoe

Harry will have a slight selection problem in the centre of the park, with Jermaine Jenas, Luka Modric, Didier Zokora and Tom Huddlestone all available. On paper, Jenas and Modric are probably the two best players in there, but Harry likes to have a slightly defensive midfielder in there to help the little Croation out.

Nobody likes the phrase ‘must-win game’, but I feel it is vital we come away with three points on Sunday to keep the run of form going and keep the confidence up.

No we haven’t signed Oliver Twist!
