AS the sun sets on the noughties, it sets on a decade in which Lyon dominated French football. 2009 however, marked a turning point, as south-west giants Bordeaux, knocked Lyon off their mighty throne to secure the 2008/09 Ligue 1 title.
2009 resumed after the winter break with a number of teams scrambling for top spot. Leading the table was Lyon, aiming to win an eighth successive Ligue 1 championship. An over-performing Rennes along with Marseilles and Bordeaux made up the chasing pack, all within touching distance of top place.

2009 in Scottish Football was like a roller coaster ride at Alton Towers. From the disappointment and embarrassment of the Scottish Clubs in European Competition to the climax of another final day league battle between Rangers and Celtic plus the relegation climax which saw Inverness lose their SPL status.

What a crazy season in the League of Ireland! Eventually on the final day the fight for the title between Bohemians and Shamrock came to an end, with the Bohs victorious. A day after the last match it was sadly announced that Derry would be demoted after breaking FAI rules. It was a tough season financially for all the teams in the league, but i’m going to review the season on the pitch.

Atletico Madrid v Chelsea – Tuesday
Atletico Madrid hosts Chelsea, as the Spanish side will try to claim, there own back on the London club. Will there be British success in this year’s Europa League?

Following Aston Villa’s disappointing elimination in the first round of the newly created Europa League, there are only three British teams currently still in the competition. Ever since Liverpool’s dramatic 5-4 victory over Alaves in the 2001 UEFA Cup final, teams competing in the English and Scottish Premier League have found progressing beyond the initial knock out stages a tough task.
