Championship Preview 20th October

20 October 2009 by gavh

Six Matches To Catch

Blackpool v Sheff Utd
Blackpool and Sheffield United could well be the contest of the night, in the Coca Cola Championship. Blackpool has started the season very well, and if they beat The Blades tonight, it would be their fifth straight home win. Blackpool is fifth, but they are quite a way a way from the automatic spots. This match favours Blackpool, with their lucrative home record this season, as they have beaten Newcastle, Coventry and Peterborough at home this season. Blackpool has the likes of, Charlie Adam and Hamuer Bouazza who can trouble the Blades defence. Striker Ben Burgess has also clocked up with four goals this season.

Sheffield United have dropped off the pace this season, as they find themselves in a poor 11th place. The Blades suffered, a heavy defeat to Scunthorpe on Saturday, as that was their fourth consecutive game without a win. Sheffield United has been conceding, many goals in the past two to three months, as the defence looks lost this season. Sheffield United has also got many injury problems, heading into the game with Blackpool. Jamie Ward, Lee Williamson, Gary Naysmith and Nick Montgomery are some of the names, which are unavailable for the Tuesday night clash. This could be a very close game, as it could go either way tonight.

Cardiff v Coventry
On form Cardiff face a difficult battle with Coventry City tonight. Cardiff is third in the table, and has picked up seven points from nine. To be fair, Cardiff has been inconsistent, with their results this season.  However in their last three games, Cardiff has scored eleven goals. Michael Chopra is the top scorer, in the Championship this season; also Peter Whittingham has scored eight from midfield. The stats all show in The Bluebirds favour, however you can’t ever under estimate Coventry.

Coventry is in a mid-table place, as they will try to pick up three points against Cardiff tonight. Coventry has only won once in Cardiff in their past five previous trips, however The Sky Blues will take to a whole new stadium tonight. Coventry has brought in two loan players yesterday, one of which is a defender, and the other a striker from Carlisle. Hussey and Madine could well make their debuts tonight for Coventry. Arron Gunnarsson suffered what looked like a nasty injury at the weekend, and he could be out for sometime. On the positive note, Coventry strikers Leon Best and Clinton Morrison has scored twelve goals between them.

Ipswich v Watford
Ipswich host a difficult Watford side, as the Tractor Boys go in search for their first win of the season. Ipswich under Roy Keane has struggled very badly this season, as they find themselves bottom of the Championship. If Ipswich loses tonight, it could mark the end, of a very difficult spell, under former Sunderland manager Roy Keane. Ipswich has plenty of talented player’s however this season, they haven’t been able to live up to their potential. Jonathan Walters is the top scorer for Ipswich, with four goals; also Tamas Priskin could make an appearance against his former club tonight. Ipswich could well have their worked cut out again, against a very good Watford side.

Watford made a very good start, to the 09/10 season, however they have just fell off the pace in recent months. Watford under Malky Mackay, claimed an impressive win against Middlesbrough on Saturday, and hopefully for The Hornets, they could claim a second win in a row, if they beat Ipswich. Watford is on form away from home, and is unbeaten in five away matches. John Eustace and Heider Helguson could return for Watford tonight, and on form duo of Danny Graham and Tom Cleverley will surely cause the Ipswich defence problems. Watford could well easily win this one; however Ipswich could well nick a first win, of the season against Watford today.

Notts Forest v Barnsley
An on form Nottingham Forest faces an on form Barnsley, on what will be a cold Tuesday night in the East Midlands. Forest have sparked into gear, as the new signings have seemed to click,  Notts Forest has won four games on the bounce, and a win tonight could make it five, the first time they will do this since 2006. Billy Davies and his players, defeated Newcastle on Saturday, and a win tonight would just clock off a fabulous week for Nottingham Forest. The only injury worry for Davies is the fitness of Robert Earnshaw who is likely to miss the game. However Dexter Blackstock is the on form striker for Notts Forest, as he could well single handily end Barnsley’s three match winning streak.

As I have already mentioned, Barnsley have won their three previous games, and will be not holding back, as they try to make it four tonight. Mark Robins has seemed to have brought, the best out of his Barnsley players in recent weeks. An impressive win against West Brom, has been followed up with wins over struggling Ipswich and Doncaster. Barnsley is currently 19th in the table, after a poor start under Simon Davey; however strikers Andy Gray, Jon Macken and Daniel Bogdanovic have bagged three goals each this season. Barnsley stunned West Brom a couple of weeks ago, so there is no means why, they can’t end Nottingham Forest unbeaten run tonight.

QPR v Reading
Qpr face Reading, in what could be, one of the high scoring games on this Tuesday night. Qpr come into this game, after an impressive 4-0 win over Preston. Jim Magilton and his players, are currently 10th in the table, however a win tonight, could send them into the top six of the table. Qpr are also unbeaten in eleven home league games, so Loftus Road is known as a fortress to them. If Adel Taarabt can produce what he did at the weekend, Reading could well get stuffed tonight. On the other hand, Matthew Connolly and Mikele Leigertwood could well miss out with infections and flu.

Reading has started poorly, this season under Brendan Rodgers, as a loss tonight could well see his job on the line. Reading could well end up in the bottom three tonight, if results don’t go their way. Plus Ryan Bertrand and an on form Matt Mills could well be injured tonight. Shane Long and Noel Hunt haven’t found their goal scoring boots, so far this season. Reading were one of the sheer favourites for promotion this season, however that target seems long off. Reading needs to start scoring goals, or they could be in serious danger if they lost today. A Qpr win for me tonight, and personally I think a change of manager, is imminent if they lose this evening.

Sheff Wed v Preston
This could be the match of the night, as Sheffield Wednesday take on a good looking Preston. Sheffield Wednesday are currently 13th, however if results go in favour of them tonight, they could climb the table and end up in the play-off places, if they beat Preston today. Sheffield Wednesday could well make this their third successive home win. Also The Owls trio of, Richard Wood, Etienne Esajas and Marcus Tudgay could all make a return to the Sheffield team tonight. Marcus Tudgay is also the leading scorer for Brian Laws team, and he could well cause the Preston defence problems. Also Jermaine Johnson could heap misery on Preston’s full back tonight.

Preston have started the season well, however if they lose against Sheffield Wednesday tonight, they could well drop out of the top six. Preston North End form has dropped, as they have only managed to pick up, one point from a possible nine. Alan Irvine will hope that, Preston will get back to winning ways as soon as possible. Chris Brown has scored seven this season, Neil Mellor six and Jon Parkin four. That proves the strikers are not shy of the goal. Callum Davidson could make a return to the Preston side, however Paul Parry could well be out. The loss against Qpr could well knock Preston for six, but it also could spark a revival for them. This could well be an entertaining match.

The Other Six Matches
Bristol City v Plymouth
Doncaster v Peterborough
Leicester v Crystal Palace
Middlesbrough v Derby
Scunthorpe v Newcastle
West Brom v Swansea
