Where Will ‘Rino’ Choose Next?

10 December 2009 by rosstheger

AC Milan’s tigerish and dynamic midfielder Gennaro ‘Rino’ Gattuso has been subject of strong rumours which link him to a move to the English Premier League over the past few weeks. At the front of the queue, Manchester City have been targeting the 31 year-old for a January move according to Italian press. Gattuso hasn’t featured for AC Milan since the Champions League 1-1 draw with Real Madrid due to a re-appearing injury which has hampered Gattuso for the past year or two. One things for sure, The Milan No.8 will bring a wealth of experience and bags of determination and work ethic that will be imperative for any side in the final few months of the season.

Vice President of the Milan Giants Adriano Galliani has weighed in on the debate about Gattuso’s Milan future by saying, “Milan is not a hotel where you can check out anytime you want. Rino has a contract with Milan and I don’t think he has an agreement with anyone – that’s what he told me. Now he has two roads; he can either extend his contract or leave, therefore he’ll take a decision in December, before January.” It seems Gattuso is avaliable to leave Milan in January with a number of clubs pursuing interest in the tenacious midfielder.

Also interested is former manager of Gattuso, Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea. From a Chelsea point of view, I can’t really understand why they would need another midfielder when they have Lampard, Essien, Ballack, Mikel and Deco but I guess he will bring something different to The Blues in terms of tenacity and hunger in the middle of the park. In 1999, Milan spent £8m on Gattuso who peaked under Ancelotti who was instantly impressed by his ability which allowed Ancelotti to place the elegant Andrea Pirlo in a more attacking position with Gattuso playing deeper in midfield.

Further back in the queue to sign Gattuso, and due to their financial situation very unlikely, is his old club Rangers. Gattuso has stated a few times that he wants to return to Ibrox in the near future after spending a year in the West of Scotland making 40 appearances for the Scottish Champions. There is no question if Gattuso was offered Man City, Chelsea or Rangers that he would head back to Ibrox – but the main problem that hampers his move to Glasgow is Rangers’ current financial situation. I would hazard a guess that Milan would want at least £5m for the Italian International and simply Rangers don’t have that money. But who knows? Fingers-crossed Rangers manage to become supporter-owned backed by a few investors which might see the ambition to bring a player of Gattuso’s class to Ibrox.

So, Gattuso certainly has a dilemma in the next few weeks whether to stay in Northern Italy or head back to the UK where many clubs are interested. The Milan star who has made 283 appearances for La Rossoneri will probably be more suited to British Football with his powerful running and energy, but his hoping to make a return to action for Milan against Palermo next weekend.
