Liverpool On The Slide?

6 October 2009 by gavh

Liverpool Fc had a great season in 08/09 finishing in second place, behind Manchester United who claimed the title with 90 points. Also last season, Liverpool looked a brilliant bet to win the Premier League trophy at the end of May, however slip ups at their home ground of Anfield cost them the League.

This season the Reds have started poorly as they sit in 6th place in the Premier League table, maybe you can say the same for Arsenal who is only one place above Liverpool, however they have a better goal difference than Liverpool and they also have a game in hand. Where though has it gone wrong for Liverpool so far?

Tottenham shock Liverpool 2-1

There have been a lot of critics over Benitez tactics and the players he plays ever since he joined the club. This season you can say the same, is it right to play Lucas in Centre Midfield, or where is it best to play Steven Gerrard. For me Liverpool selling Xabi Alonso has affected the club dramatically, also it is worrying when Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard don’t score goals consistently. Liverpool need to sign a striker in January, maybe even two in some extent. Torres with N’Gog isn’t good enough for a big club like Liverpool. Maybe you can class Dirk Kuyt as a striker, even though Benitez doesn’t seem to play him up front. Jamie Carragher also hasn’t the best start to a Premier League season for Liverpool, as him and his fellow defenders seem to be shedding too many goals. There are a lot of worrying signs at Liverpool especially with the lack of depth the squad has.

Is his squad selection damaging Liverpool?

Liverpool’s results haven’t been anywhere consistent as last season. The Reds have already lost three league games in 09/10, and the season isn’t even halfway through yet. Tottenham stunned them on the first day of the season winning 2-1 at White Hart Lane. A poor home performance against Villa saw Liverpool lose their second league game in about a week. A Lucas own goal, Curtis Davies and Ashley Young scored the goals for Villa, as they demolished Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield. Chelsea was the third team to beat Liverpool in the league, as they picked up a 2-0 home win against The Reds. Also you have to pick out two bad away performances from Liverpool, which they could have easily lost. Firstly the away game against Bolton ended 3-2 to Liverpool, only because a late Steven Gerrard goal gifted Liverpool all three points. Also the away game against West Ham also ended 3-2 in favour of Liverpool. A revitalised Fernando Torres saw the game end in Liverpool’s favour.

Liverpool has also started their Champions League campaign very sluggishly. A 1-0 home win against Debrecen was nothing to smile about, for the Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez and Liverpool fans for that matter. However the worst performance probably this season so far had to come against Fiorentina. It was a bad night in Italy, as Liverpool didn’t look like scoring against an impressive Fiorentina side. Jovetic scored both goals for Fiorentina last week, as many fans and pundits were in awe over this wonder kid.  Will Liverpool drop out of the top 4 this season; also will they go out in the Group Stages of the Champions League? Liverpool need to up their game if they want to be successful this season, or it could well be curtains for Rafa at the end of the Premier League season.
