Premier League Preview 17-19 October

16 October 2009 by gavh

Five Matches To Catch

Aston Villa v Chelsea
This will surely be the match of the weekend, as Aston Villa take on Chelsea at Villa Park. Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last five matches, however this is a real tester against the league leaders. Gabriel Agbonlahor is Villa’s top goalscorer; however he will most likely have his work cut out, against the Blues centre backs of John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho. Aston Villa will also pose a threat from the wings, as Ashley Young and James Milner will cause Chelsea’s wing backs problems. This will be a tough game for Villa but they are capable enough of defeating Chelsea tomorrow lunch time.

Chelsea is top of the league, and has a minor advantage as they take on Aston Villa tomorrow. Stats state, that Chelsea has picked up nine points from losing positions this season. Ancelotti’s men have also got the best second half record in the Premier League. The strike force of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka are also on form, as they have scored eleven goals between them this season. Frank Lampard has seemed to of lost his goalscoring touch,  however Chelsea still have the likes of Florent Malouda, Michael Ballack and comeback star Joe Cole who can bang them in for the Blues.

Portsmouth v Tottenham
Portsmouth faces Tottenham, as Harry Redknapp makes a return to him former club. Portsmouth has hit dire straights with Paul Hart in charge, as they only won their first Premier League game, of the season two weeks ago. Portsmouth has lost many players this season, but have drafted in plenty aswell, mostly of which are known as fringe players, to their former clubs. Their top scorer is Younes Kaboul who is a defender, as many of their top players like Tommy Smith, Kanu and Frederic Piquionne have failed to score this season. Against a very strong Tottenham side, Pompey could be thrashed quite comfortably tomorrow afternoon.

Tottenham will surely win this match; however stranger things have happened in football. Aswell as Harry Redknapp, players Niko Kranjcar and Peter Crouch will make their first returns to Fratton Park, the club of which they both left this summer. Tottenham are third in the table on sixteen points, behind Manchester United and Chelsea. Strikers Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane have been scoring plenty of goals, as they have both scored six goals each. Tottenham will field a strong starting eleven and probably a strong bench aswell. Tottenham have threats all over the park, as wingers Aaron Lennon and Niko Kranjcar will cause problems, aswell as centre midfielders Wilson Palacios and Tom Huddlestone. Tottenham have a big advantage, however they have only kept one clean sheet, in their last fifteen away trips.

Sunderland v Liverpool
Sunderland could give Liverpool, a right battle at The Stadium Of Light tomorrow afternoon. Sunderland has been the surprise package of the Premier League this season, as they currently sit in 8th place. Sunderland is unbeaten in their last four home matches, and they could well easily make it five against Liverpool. Darren Bent has been scoring for fun this season, as he has bagged seven goals in 09/10. Kenwyne Jones has also clocked in with five so far this season. New Sunderland signing Bolo Zenden could well start for the Black Cats, only less he is given international clearance in time. According to stats Liverpool have a big advantage of wins against Sunderland; however the Black Cats are a whole different team this season.

Liverpool hasn’t made the best of starts to the Premier League season. Benitez and his players are currently 6th in the table, and they have the potential of dropping out of the top four. Liverpool has many injury worries aswell ahead of this big clash with Sunderland, as Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are both ruled out through injury. Liverpool will have a lot of work to do tomorrow but Benayoun, Kuyt and N’Gog are capable of scoring goals, but to be honest I think Sunderland will beat Liverpool tomorrow.

Blackburn v Burnley
Its the Lancashire derby on Sunday, as Blackburn host rivals Burnley. The last time these two met was way back in 2005, in a FA Cup match. Blackburn has been impressive at home, as in their last ten home matches they have only lost once. Blackburn however is struggling this season, and so is Burnley with their away form. Rovers have got many threats especially in midfield, as an on form David Dunn, Morten Gamst Pedersen and El Hadji Diouf will surely cause the Burnley defence problems. Blackburn’s strikers though have failed to hit the net consistently this season, as Benni McCarthy, Jason Roberts and David Hoilett have all scored only once this season.

Burnley has started the Premier League with a flourish, as they still sit within the top ten of the table. Burnley are 9th and their home form is defiantly something to brag about, however if you are talking about their away form its not something the club want to here. Burnley has conceded the most away goals in the Premiership this season, and they have also been hammered by Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham. On a positive note as it is Derby day between the two, Burnley could well come out all guns blazing and take the game to Blackburn. Robbie Blake, David Nugent and Steven Fletcher will all be key players for Burnley on Sunday.

Wigan v Man City
Wigan takes on Man City on Sunday, in which could be a very interesting game. Wigan has made a steady start to the season, and they are currently in a decent mid-table position. This will be a real test against a Man City team packed with stars, however Wigan haven’t lost against Man City at home since 1998. Rodallega is Wigan’s top scorer at the minute with three goals; however his strike partner Jason Scotland is yet to score in a Wigan shirt, since his move from Swansea this summer. Wigan however does have Paul Scharner on form, and also a couple of potential threats from midfield. Charles N’Zogbia and Cho Won-Hee could cause Man City chaos on Sunday.

Man City has made an excellent start to the 09/10 Premiership season. Mark Hughes and his players are in the top four of the table; however they could well slip out of it this weekend. The Citizens could well have many players out injured this weekend as; Jolean Lescott, Kolo Toure and Vincent Kompany are all doubts. Robinho, Nedum Onuoha and Benjani are already sidelined for Man City, in what will be a very tough game against Wigan. Craig Bellamy though is on form and has scored four goals so far for Man City; Adebayor has also scored four, with Tevez and Santa Cruz also possible strikers which could start at the weekend. Man City though has won two of their first four away matches this season, which is quite a good record.
