Premiership Player Profile – Paul Scharner

7 December 2009 by gavh

This is the fifth player profile that myself and fellow blogger 5stars, have done over the past few weeks. We have already featured David Dunn, Darren Fletcher, Clint Dempsey and John Carew. Today’s player is Paul Scharner and on Wednesday 5stars will be featuring Everton youngster Jack Rodwell…

Since joining Wigan in the year 2006 from Norwegian side Sk Brann, Scharner has established himself as an important and colourful player in the Latics side. On his Wigan debut Scharner scored the winning goal in a Carling Cup tie against Arsenal, that year Wigan were able to reach the final of that prestigious English trophy. Paul Scharner most successful season came way back in the 2007/2008 campaign, he made 37 appearances for Wigan that season and he also netted four goals.

This season Scharner has played almost everywhere on the field, centre-back, centre midfield and now attacking midfield. The Austrian international has also captained the side this year, aswell as making seventeen appearances so far this season and scoring three goals. Scharner’s first goal of this season came against Everton at Goodison Park, however Wigan lost the game as Everton left-back Leighton Baines netted a last minute penalty to sink his former club. Paul Scharner second goal came in the 3-1 shock win over Chelsea, the Austrian netted the last of Wigan’s three goals in that game. His third goal came in that embarrassing 9-1 loss against Tottenham Hotspur.

Now I move onto his wacky hairstyles. Since his time at Wigan, Scharner has mastered some weird looking hairstyles, as this season has seen him style a half black half cream haircut. X Factor rejects John and Edward would be proud of some of Paul Scharner’s hairstyles, as he also showed off a red and blue Mohican last season. Lastly he has also styled a plain shaved Mohican. What will Paul Scharner show off next I wonder? Scharner could well be moving clubs soon however Latics boss Roberto Martinez has urged the player to stay. The attacking midfielder has been linked with a move to Everton and with the injury’s the Toffees have, Scharner could well be an important figure for Everton only if he decides to switch clubs that is.

    Love that line.

PS, I’m really enjoying these profiles, any chance of a Stoke player soon?

As you can see I*T*P*L, Rodwell of Everton is next. Next week is a Goalkeeper special week but we have already decided which keepers we are going to feature(Not Sorensen sorry)

However we are doing a player from every club first, then when we have done a player from all 20 clubs, then when we have finished featuring a player from every club we will just carry on until we run out of ideas.

The first Stoke player we will do will probably be Etherington or Delap.
