Adidas Kopanya 2009 Confederations Cup ball

For the first time ever, Adidas has created and manufactured a specialist football for the 2009 Confederations Cup.

The new ball, with its unusual design, was unveiled to a large South African crowd as their national side competed against Cameroon in the annual Nelson Mandela challenge match becoming the first teams to ever use the Kopanya.

The word “Kopanya” comes from Southern Sesotho which is an official language spoken by around 5 million people.

Kopanya’s unusual design was inspired by the artwork of the Ndebele people of South Africa. This is shown by the complex black shapes that are traditional Ndebele elements. These shapes have been mixed with the vibrant colours that typifies modern Ndebele artists. The silver edge given to it provides a futuristic touch. The ball contains the perfect flight characteristics that allows players fantastic ball control.
